News Applications Developer

  • Work collaboratively as a full-stack developer (JavaScript, Python, PostgreSQL, Ubuntu) on the NPR Visuals Team – a team of designers, developers, photographers, producers and editors – on data-driven and visual storytelling projects
  • Lead technical development of front-end practice, introducing npm, Webpack, and virtual DOM-based frameworks.
  • Lead development of award-winning Look At This, an ongoing project experimenting with photo-driven sequential visual storytelling
  • Maintain multiple open-source tools, including Lunchbox, a suite of social media image creation tools; the team's app template, a Flask-based tool for creating static websites; pym.js, a JavaScript library for embedding iframes responsively; and dailygraphics, a Flask and d3.js-based project for creating code-based graphics and keeping them in version control
  • Release almost all story-driven projects as open-source software
  • Architect measurement of custom metrics for team projects and produce internal team reports on those metrics
